Caries, a pathological process that involves the gradual destruction of bone or tooth tissue, and most often detrimental to the health and appearance of teeth. It is caused by the interaction between the tooth surface, biofilm bacteria in the mouth, and sugars from food.

Risk factors for the development of oral diseases and caries:

Foods, high in sugar. Consumption of excessive amounts of sugar activates bacteria in the oral cavity, which converts sugar into acids that dissolve tooth enamel. The risk of tooth decay increases if a person consumes sugar more than 4 times a day or more than 50 g.

Smoking or chewing tobacco. Smoking increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer, as well as changes the color of teeth, causes bad breath, premature loss of teeth, loss of taste and smell. The harmful effects of tobacco are greatly enhanced in combination with alcohol because harmful chemicals contained in tobacco smoke, under the influence of alcohol more easily get into the cells of the mucous membrane of the mouth and throat.

Alcohol abuse. This is a major risk factor for cancer of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, and esophagus. Alcoholic beverages often have high acidity and sugar content, which increases the risk of tooth decay.

Insufficient oral hygiene. Poor dental care leads to the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth, the formation of a bacterial film on the teeth, resulting in caries, gingivitis, periodontitis.

Gum infection increases the risk of tooth loss, diabetes, and heart disease.

Proper dental care includes:
