Principles for Good Oral Hygiene

Proper oral hygiene, and therefore the cleaning of teeth and gums, is essential to avoid periodontal disease and tooth decay. How to brush your teeth to be healthy? How to prevent the formation of caries? How to care for children’s teeth?

1. How should you brush your teeth?
To brush your teeth, we should use a soft brush or a brush with medium bristles. Those with hard bristles can damage the gums and tooth necks, especially if they are exposed. The toothbrush is worth replacing every two months. The one that has damaged bristles is not effective and does not clean the space between the teeth well. In daily dental care, dental floss also plays an important role. It allows you to remove debris that has accumulated in the gaps between the teeth and to which the toothbrush has no access. When choosing a toothpaste, choose one that does not irritate the periodontium. However, brushing your teeth is not enough. Bacteria are also collected on the tongue and gums, which must be removed. Therefore, it is recommended to wash the tongue. Some toothbrushes have pads for cleaning the tongue. It is recommended to brush your teeth daily, at least twice a day.

2. What is the risk of not having teeth?
Without brushing teeth, we not only condemn others to our bad breath, but also lead to tooth diseases. Inadequate oral care contributes to inflammation that may be the beginning of a systemic disease, for example: heart disease, kidney disease, arthritis, as well as gastrointestinal diseases.

3. How to prevent the formation of caries?
Just brushing your teeth is not enough to make sure nothing dangerous is happening in our mouth. The dentist should be regularly visited. It is recommended that you show up at the dentist’s office at least once every six months. Thanks to this, we can detect small cavities earlier and prevent the formation of extensive cavities. It is also recommended to remove tartar and plaque, which can lead to inflammation.

4. Teeth care in children
Children should visit the dentist more often – at least once every three months. Deciduous teeth that are not properly nurtured spoil much faster. Taking care of your teeth, you must also remember about the right diet. If we catch something sweet or a special delicacy we give to a child, remember to clean your teeth thoroughly after eating. We should start cleaning children’s teeth with water alone. When a toddler can spit out a paste, we can reach for a special preparation for the youngest. Older children can brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste. You can also do fluoridation and sealing molars and premolars. It will protect young teeth against bacteria attack and strengthen them.
